Remember way back in 2002 when the Buccaneers won Super Bowl 37? That sure seems like a long time ago doesn’t it? That’s because it was. The Bucs have only been back to the playoffs twice since then, losing both contests.

This year it looks like more of the same for this franchise. Pick your Josh. Neither Josh Freeman or Josh Johnson have what it takes to be a starting quarterback in this league and that’s all they’ve got.

At running back they are left with Cadillac Williams and Derrick Ward, both of which haven’t shown anything resembling consistency. Newly minted Gerald McCoy out of Oklahoma might help them on the defensive end, but there’s only so much one guy can do.

This team does not have many bright areas and for that they are going to finish with the worst record in the league at 2-14.

Barth’s FG in overtime lifts lowly Bucs for Saints’ second straight loss

The moment Garrett Hartley’s foot drove through the ball, the Louisiana Superdome crowd erupted and Saints owner Tom Benson raised his arms in triumph.

The presumption was that these Saints, in this magical season, were going to pull out another win in the clutch.

Not so fast.

Hartley’s 37-yarder hooked to the left, and those who’d allowed themselves to celebrate prematurely were sent home soon after in stunned silence.

Carnell Williams rushed for 129 yards and a score, and Connor Barth kicked a 47-yard field goal in overtime, lifting Tampa Bay to a 20-17 upset on Sunday that, for the time being, prevented New Orleans from securing home field throughout the NFC playoffs.

Even in what will go down as the best regular season in Saints history, a franchise long known more for its stumbles than success found a way to make history with a loss. According to STATS LLC, the result marked the first time a 13-win team lost to a team that came in with only two victories.

Bucs’ Morris Doesn’t Apologize For Fourth-Down Calls

These are tough times for Bucs coach Raheem Morris. His team is 1-10 and every decision he makes – whether it’s demoting his defensive coordinator or dialing up a fake punt on fourth down while holding a four-point lead in the fourth quarter – is being second-guessed.

Even Morris is second-guessing himself.

“You always second-guess yourself the next morning,” Morris said Monday, a day after two questionable play calls helped the Falcons rally for a 20-17 victory at the Georgia Dome. “During the game, no, you don’t second-guess. But right now, it didn’t work, so yeah, I’m second-guessing myself.”

What Morris and most everyone else is second-guessing are two fourth-down plays in the fourth quarter, one in which Morris called for a fake punt while leading 17-13 with 12:59 to play and another two series later in which he ordered a 51-yard field-goal attempt while still holding the same lead.

Neither play worked. Punter Dirk Johnson’s pass on the fake fell incomplete and kicker Connor Barth missed wide right on the field-goal try that came with 2:34 to play. Even worse, the two failed plays helped give the Falcons a short field for what proved to be a 59-yard game-winning scoring drive.

As much as that has Morris second-guessing himself, he isn’t apologizing for his decisions. Though he admits to looking back on those plays and wondering if he made the right call with them, Morris talked Monday like a coach who would make the same calls again if given another chance.

QB Freeman Gives Bucs Some Hope

The future of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was unveiled Sunday when rookie quarterback Josh Freeman got his first NFL start against the Green Bay Packers.

And while it is too early to know exactly what the Bucs have invested long-term, the early returns have provided instant dividends.

Freeman generated his first fourth-quarter comeback victory and helped Tampa Bay win its first game of the season Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Now it is too soon to start molding his bust and making reservations to Canton, or calling him the greatest thing since John Elway.

Still, there was something about the kid’s play that has to make Buc fans hopeful.

For you and me, the decision seems simple enough.

The Buccaneers stink, their offense is going nowhere, and the future of the franchise is standing just a few feet away on the sideline. So why wouldn’t you start Josh Freeman at quarterback when the Bucs return to the field in 12 days?

Ah, but for Raheem Morris and Mark Dominik, the decision is a bit more complicated.

By destiny and design, the Bucs coach and general manager have become inextricably linked with their rookie quarterback. In a season that appears hellbent on disappointment, Freeman’s development is the last opportunity for a positive vibe.

Buccaneers LB Barrett Ruud takes loss personally

If you wanted to find one Buccaneers player who was thoroughly disgusted with Sunday’s loss to New England, you had to look no further than a certain player sitting with a towel draped over his head, facing the wall in the back corner of the Wembley Stadium locker room.

That player was LB Barrett Ruud, whose missed tackle in the second quarter cost the Bucs a pivotal touchdown. Ruud sat there, speaking to no one, for what seemed like an eternity before even mustering the energy to shower and catch the team bus.

When he finally composed himself enough to grant an interview, his frustration was obvious.

“It always starts in the mirror,” he said. “And it’s not going to be good when you play, individually, like I did. That’s where I start. There’s just too many bad plays. And it’s been consistently bad plays. All I can do is work harder.”
